Monserrate Palace Sintra, Portugal
Nestled deep in the Sintra hills stands this exquisitely unique and picturesque palace. The Arabian design surrounded by lush verdant gardens gives way to a very striking building. The twi-towered design was inspired by Islamic architecture and symmetry. Inside the palace has a beautiful carvings, geometric patterns and traditional Portuguese tiles.
Originally built in 1863, the palace was acquired by the Portuguese state in 1949 and underwent huge refurbishments from 2000-2016 when it reopened to the public. The extensive gardens surrounding the palace are thanks to a wonderful landscaper named William Stockade, a botanist named William Neville and a master gardener named James Burt, together with the romantic ideals of Francis Cook who acquired the property in the 1800’s they created beautiful winding pathways, rare holly trees, imposing cork oaks mixed with Agaves, palm trees, azaleas and bamboo, evoking feelings of Asia, Mexica and the English countryside.
